ADE Arts & Culture Program Highlights

Electronic music is much more than DJs and artists on stage, and as such, in the past years a growing number of events inspired by dance culture have been a part of ADE’s programming, next to the 2.500 artists performing in over 150 locations across Amsterdam yearly.

Charlotte Krieger x LYZZA

Visual artist Charlotte Krieger and producer LYZZA were the two selected artists for the Foam X ADE collaboration in 2018. The experimental style of both artists formed the base for this challenging project.

Krieger and LYZZA worked together on an audio-visual installation which came to life during a live performance by the two artists at Het Stenen Hoofd, a remarkable no man’s land situated along the IJ river.

Polaris (2016) by Nick Verstand; Nikki Hock; Children of the LightAmsterdam Dance Event (ADE)

POLARIS

POLARIS is a large-scale light installation that animates in accordance with our emotional response to music, and was performed live by Fatima Yamaha, Nick Verstand, Nikki Hock, and Children of the Light at the Stedelijk Museum in 2016. 

During the 25 minute audiovisual experience, 20 participants participated in a scientific experiment and wore EEG sensors that directly measured their brainwaves. These measurements and readings were translated to algorithms that indicate emotion. They triggered the installation in real-time, so that artist and audience co-create the piece together.

Detroit producer Mills took inspiration from Rembrandts work to compose 3 tracks which premiered at ADE in 2015. The tracks were composed at the Rembrandthuis, the former residence and studio of painter Rembrandt.

Before Present Opera

In Before Present the best of both worlds came together: contemporary opera and electronic dance music.Resulting in an exhilarating performance taking place at Noorderlicht, the ADE festival hub located on the post-industrial NDSM Shipyard site. Before Present was an examination of and reflection on the current times and state, as seen from the future.

Producer Sjamsoedin remixed compositions by contemporary composer Anat Spiegel. Stage director Sjaron Minailo led a group of young singers from Dutch National Opera talent, an actor/singer and a live percussioninst in the process of creation.

The installation by Heleen Blanken is a construction depicting the myriad interactions between geological structures and the earth’s atmosphere. In a subtle way, the work re-imagines the friction felt by the changing perception of what we find natural or artificial in our world.

Terrene contains different layers of natural phenomena that play with this friction. Terrene was presented at ADE in 2016 as the centerpiece of the 17th-century courtyard of the Rembrandthuis Museum, Rembrandt's former home in Amsterdam.

Jameszoo & Metropole Orchestra - Fool

In 2017 ADE opened with ‘Jameszoo & Metropole Orchestra – Fool’, a collaboration between Metropole Orchestra and Jameszoo. Jameszoo is a young member of the DJ scene, striving for development and creativity. In 2016 he released his debut album ‘Fool’.

ADE Sound Lab Art Program

ADE Sound Lab was a multi-day program covering everything about sound, art and technology. The program includes talks by leading artists and engineers, audiovisual art installations, performances, Modular Nights, DIY workshops and gear ready to be played around with.

In 2019 the For All Who Love Foundation invited the most inspiring queer voices to share their view on queer representation in nightlife.

From the importance of drag to the safety of our queer club scene, they wanted to inform and broaden the view on what it means to be queer in today’s nightlife.

During the ADE edition of 2018, Ryoji Ikeda, visual artist and a key figure in the world of electronic music, created a spectacular presentation specially for the EYE Filmmuseum.

He filled the exhibition gallery with his overwhelmingly immersive audiovisual artworks, which are based on elementary phenomena such as silence, space, time and infinity. Ikeda’s work often depicts the invisible structures and data that shape our lives.

Curated by Bogomir Doringer and Arad Inbar, this 1st edition of Body in Revolt in 2018 was focused on club culture as an initiator of changes, as a form of activism, as an artistic expression where dancing is seen as an urgency in times of socio-political crisis.

Artists gathered to address such urgency through the moving and inspiring narratives of a diverse panel of guest-speakers. Body in Revolt is a special event organized in collective force with ADE, ICK Amsterdam and Deep Focus.

The Iranian-born Dutch avant-garde artist took the stage at ADE 2018 with an art performance that goes beyond music. Sevdaliza gave an intimate and unique art performance, which she created especially for this occasion. She presented her art performance in a for a very select group or visitors at Klaproos Amsterdam.

Various elements of art, music and dance came together in the performance. Sevdaliza collaborated with choreographer Julie Magneville, keyboardist Leon den Engelsen and artist Esmay Wagemans.

Emotional Porn- Exhibition of the Self by Keren Rosenberg, Tony Markus Sacharias & Nicola Cavalazzi is a boundless universe of dance and audiovisual art installation which explores our social obsession in self-exposure through the use of modern technologies.

In this performance the boundaries between dance, video art, design and sound dissolve into an immersive space which welcomes people to connect to themselves through the reflection of the other.

MoMI: Museum of Modern Instruments

ADE invited gearhead extraordinaire and artist Arp Frique to curate MoMI in 2019, to celebrate 100 years of electronic instruments. In this pop-up museum you could find some of the most important and recognizable instruments in music history, including a few overlooked classics and a significant rare items.

The exhibition offered a tour through the evolution of electronic musical instruments, starting at the theremin.

A new installation by artist Vincent de Belleval and electronic producer Nicolás Jaar was presented for the very first time during ADE, including some exclusive live performances by the duo itself and invited guests.

Retaining the Energy, but Losing the Image (2019) consisted of ten rotating parabolas: reflectors that capture and emit sound and light. They created an ever-changing environment of interlinked reflections and feedback chains.
