Of the events at the festival, including a bazaar and exhibitions, it was the innovative costume show that received the greatest acclaim. State-of-the-art stage equipment and lighting brought the chance to experiment with production ideas never seen before.
Shows by international designers held on campus
The school adopted international exchange early on through fashion shows, including inviting Christian Dior and his entourage from Paris in 1953. Fashion shows were held at the College’s auditorium, and in four major cities.

In 1954, Howard Greer of the U.S. was invited to Japan, and shows were held at six locations in Japan. In 1958, the College invited up-and-coming French designer, Pierre Cardin, to Japan, and held shows in the College auditorium, as well as technical workshops featuring draping by Cardin.
These initiatives hit Japan’s fashion world like culture shock. Students gained both an objective as well as subjective understanding of good and bad fashion.

In 2004, during the “Kusumatrix: Kusama Yayoi" exhibition, the school engaged in a major collaboration with the artist called "Yayoi Kusama’s Avant-garde Fashion Show." Student designs inspired by the world of Yayoi Kusama were selected by the artist herself, and costumes were made after numerous meetings for toile checks, fabric, color, and coordination checks. The show took over the Roppongi area, and received great acclaim.
