The area is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its historical and cultural importance to the country. It is here that great wines are produced, including fortified ones such as Porto wine.

Braga
Considered a young city (it was the European Youth Capital in 2012), it has one of the oldest histories in Portugal. During the Roman Empire, the city was the capital of the province of Gallaecia.

A great landmark is the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its 116 meters (381 feet) zigzag stairway. The stairway is dedicated to the five senses. Each one (Sight, Smell, Hearing, Touch, Taste) is represented by a different fountain.

Guimarães
It is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site for being an "exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town" in Europe. At the end of the road, you can see Nossa Senhora da Consolação e dos Santos Passos Church.

The Castle of Guimarães was built in the 10th century to protect the monks from the constant attack from Moors and Normans. The castle is related to the country's creation, being known as the Castle of Foundation.
