Of the events at the festival, including a bazaar and exhibitions, it was the innovative costume show that received the greatest acclaim. State-of-the-art stage equipment and lighting brought the chance to experiment with production ideas never seen before.
Shows by international designers held on campus
The school adopted international exchange early on through fashion shows, including inviting Christian Dior and his entourage from Paris in 1953. Fashion shows were held at the College’s auditorium, and in four major cities.

In 1954, Howard Greer of the U.S. was invited to Japan, and shows were held at six locations in Japan. In 1958, the College invited up-and-coming French designer, Pierre Cardin, to Japan, and held shows in the College auditorium, as well as technical workshops featuring draping by Cardin.
These initiatives hit Japan’s fashion world like culture shock. Students gained both an objective as well as subjective understanding of good and bad fashion.
Alumni shows
The large fashion show “Ten Designers on the World Stage” was held for the opening of the newly completed Endo Memorial Hall in 1979.

Kenzo Takada, Mitsuhiro Matsuda, Junko Koshino, Hiroko Koshino, and Isao Kaneko and other College graduates active on the world stage, and looked up to by current students, put on a magnificent show. In 2003, the 80th anniversary of the College’s founding was celebrated by holding the show “Eighty Creators,” which was put on by 80 graduates.
Art × Fashion、 Culture × Fashion
The College has collaborated in projects with creators, companies, and art fashion universities outside Japan since the beginning of the 21st century. In 2004, during the “Kusumatrix: Kusama Yayoi" exhibition, the school engaged in a major collaboration with the artist called "Yayoi Kusama’s Avant-garde Fashion Show." Student designs inspired by the world of Yayoi Kusama were selected by the artist herself, and costumes were made after numerous meetings for toile checks, fabric, color, and coordination checks. The show took over the Roppongi area, and received great acclaim.

In 2010, a fashion show was held to celebrate the 1,300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital, with the support of Nara City and Nara Prefecture. Some 120 pieces, including costumes and accessories were made and put on display.
Collaboration student show with Shenker College in IsraelBunka Fashion College
The College has conducted a wide range of fashion-related cultural exchanges with students outside Japan, including collaborative shows with the Geneva School of Art and Design in Switzerland and the Shenkar College of Engineering in Israel.
School festival shows today, and going forward
The management of school festival shows underwent a major change starting 1977, with all aspects, including design, staging, lighting, and production, being handled mainly by students.

Since 1984, the shows have grown into hot events visited by 20,000 people every year, and receiving backing from leading Japanese textile companies, such as Asahi Kasei Corporation, Mitsubishi Rayon, and Toray Industries, as well as textile production centers outside Japan. They have also taken on a more international flavor.

At the show in 2008, costumes were displayed that were inlaid with Wiener Philharmoniker coins on loan from the Austrian Mint.

In 2015, an ASEAN-themed project was developed in which participating students visited ASEAN-member countries, procured traditional materials that were the pride of each respective nation, and made costumes with them.
Presenting the opportunity to explore and realize new possibilities, these shows will continue to be a venue where students can develop their individual styles.
