GE scientist Ed Powers takes his younger brother Johnny to an exhibit about atomic power. Ed explains how a basic understanding of the elements began in ancient Greece. As they travel through the exhibit, Ed explains the basics of atomics and recent discoveries, including a basic understanding of radioactivity, the development of the cyclotron, Einstein’s theory of matter and energy, early fission experiments, nuclear chain reactions, the Manhattan Project, and the development of plutonium. Safety initiatives including mechanical hands, are mentioned, as are GE’s facility at Hanford, Washington, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, and future uses for atomic power, including ships, submarines, and commercial electric power.
