The Cassani Tractor 40 HP
In 1927, brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani make one of the first agricultural tractors in the world with a diesel engine which wins the national “Trattrice agricola italiana” competition in the early 1930s.
The birth of SAME
After years of experience designing advanced diesel engines and injection pumps, in 1942 the Cassani brothers found SAME (Società Accomandita Motori Endotermici) in Treviglio, in the Province of Bergamo.
4-wheel drive
The SAME DA 25 arrives in 1952, the first tractor with 4-wheel drive produced on an industrial scale. ‘DA’ (Diesel Air) indicates the characteristic cooling type for the first SAME engines, ‘25’ the horsepower.
Specialised: vineyard and orchard tractors
SAME has dedicated itself to designing tractors for specialist crops from the beginning. These machines had limited dimensions so as to move easily between the rows without damaging plants.
SAC: Automatic Control Station
The first SAME original SAC is produced in 1959, a system governing the implements connected to the tractor, controlling and regulating operation through levers on the wheel.
Machines equipped with SAC will be called “intelligent tractors”.
The evolution of the SAME factory in Treviglio
In the 1960s, the SAME factory evolves, is expanded and modernised. The nearby railway yard allows tractors to be shipped worldwide.
Samecars
The 1960s is also the decade of the Samecar, the multifunction tractor that works the land and bears the produce.
Internationalisation
In the 1960s, the Centauro, Leone and Minitauro tractors make a decisive contribution to spreading agricultural mechanisation and the SAME name worldwide.
Honours
In 1967 SAME is honoured with the National “Oscar for Commerce” Mercurio d’Oro Award, for companies deemed deserving because of their contribution to the development of national production.
High-power tractors
In the 1970s, SAME enters the high-power tractor segment.
A tiger with four eyes
The new SAME logo arrives in the 1980s, a rich, complex symbol summing up 4-wheel drive (4-eyed tiger) but also strength, the company’s nobility, the power of the machines and above all the capacity for innovation.

Explorer and Laser: successful families
The new Explorer and Laser SAME tractor families arrived in 1983, machines that summed up all the technical experience developed by the Treviglio-based company in the medium-high-power sector.
Crawlers
Crawlers are typically Italian tractors. Their use is explained by the country’s complex and diverse landscape. To this day, they are widely used for work on hills, in both vineyards and open fields.
The company now
Today, SAME is an SDF brand.
SDF is one of the largest tractor, harvester and diesel engine manufacturers in the world. It distributes its products under the SAME, DEUTZ-FAHR, Lamborghini Trattori, Hürlimann, Grégoire and Vitibot brands.
The Treviglio factory now
The company’s main site is still rooted in Treviglio today. Production, sales, after-sales and spare parts distribution are ensured by many European and Asian production plants and commercial branches plus importers and dealers worldwide.
SDF Historical Archive
The SDF Historical Archive is inaugurated in 2004, with the task of gathering, preserving and showcasing the historical documentation on SDF and its brands. It contains over 260,000 technical drawings and 47,000 catalogued and digitised documents.
SAME Museum
The SAME Museum, opened in 2008, together with the Historical Archives bears witness to the technological, cultural and human journey the Treviglio-based company has taken over the years, in more than 30 displays, of tractors, engines and mechanical components.
