Arumjigi Culture Keepers restored it into the beautiful house you see today. It helps people comfortably experience life in a traditional house. Master's Quarters
Dignity from the Wisdom of Age
After entering through the main gate and passing by the low stone wall surrounding the house, you will arrive at the Master's Quarters, which is impressive for its quiet yet deep color wood. This was a place for men. Here, the master of the house talked with guests, offered them food, and let them stay overnight. The 150-year old original structure was kept intact when restoration work was done on this part, and the interior structure is as it was in the late Joseon period.
The Master's Quarters of this house tell us an interesting story. When you look after from the wooden verandah outside the room, there stands the pointed mountain peak over Hwarim Valley. The peak was once called the 'Peak of Literature' because it resembles the tip of a brush in shape. For this reason, the people believed that the family would produce many literati scholars. Come and sit where a real scholar used to sit and sense his mental struggle as he strive to study with a clear mind amid the beauty of nature.
Inner Quarters
Go around the Master's Quarters to the back, and you will see the Inner Quarters with inner courtyard. The Inner Quarters were residential quarters for women, and such quarters typically had a kitchen. Built in a linear layout, the Inner Quarters of Hamyang Hanok have a main floored hall in between the main living room and smaller room and an extended verandah. Stepping up and entering floored hall, you see a spacious room on your right and a smaller room on your left.
Main Floored Hall
The main floored hall is the most open and freest space of all of a traditional house. In the Main Floored Hall of Hamyang Hanok, you can enjoy the simple beauty of the inner courtyard and refreshing air wafting in from the backyard where bamboo grows. This floored hall was large enough for the whole family to use as a living room, and a full pair glass window allowed visitors to enjoy the bamboo forest at the back, even during the coldest days of winter.
Ondol Rooms
When you open the window of the Main Living Room in the morning, crisp air and refreshing scenery of a broad and flat rock and plum trees will greet you. If you look up a little higher, you can see the gentle silhouette of the tiled roof of the Master's Quarters against blue sky. The smaller room across the main living room has convenient built-in closet for visitors to keep clothes and luggage. Come enjoy the essence of living in a traditional house in these warm ondol (under-floor heating) rooms that have a natural feel.
Wood-floored Room
There was originally a kitchen in this place. It was remodeled as the wood-floored room you see today. Commanding a sweeping view, you can see Mt. Gwaegwansan beyond the Master's Quarters. Here, you can enjoy the elegance of a Korean house that embraces nature. The resorted Hamyang Hanok has a new modern toilet inside for the convenience of visitors. Although a traditional Korean house has a toilet outside, this alteration was necessary so that Arumjigi Hanok could serve numerous visitors.
Kitchen
The Kitchen of Hamyang Hanok was originally an annexed facility used for storage. Remodeled as a kitchen with a pair glass wall, its brightness and openness filled mealtime with warmth and joy.
Porridge and side dishes made from fresh produce of the season, other side dishes, and steamed foods are offered for breakfast. Dinner includes boiled and sliced pork served with spicy cabbage leaves to wrap the meat, vegetables grown in the kitchen garden, pickled herbs, and soybean stew. Aromatic herbal tea processed from herbs grown in the backyard is also served.
Bathroom
The inside of a storeroom with stone and clay wall and a grass roof was remodeled into this bathroom with a bathtub and shower stall that visitors could refresh themselves from the fatigue of travel and city life.
