After the Second World War, the Soviet Union reinforced its efforts to establish an industrialized and socialist society. While officially antisemitism was not existent, Jews and Jewesses experienced discrimination in matters of language, education, and religion.
Due to the suppression of Jewish life, Jewish religion and culture was practiced in secret. Remembrance culture was also a private affair: The socialist ideals left no room to remember the specific persecution of Jews and Jewesses during the Shoah.
