Wetlands under pressure

Wetlands are vital ecosystems. Although they may seem resilient, they are in danger. Urban development fills them in or drains them to build cities, roads, and hotels.

Agricultural impact

Intensive agriculture diverts water and contaminates it with fertilizers and pesticides, disrupting the natural functioning of wetlands.

Silent threats

Industrial and household pollution releases wastewater and toxic waste that harm plants and animals.

Extreme climates

Climate change alters rainfall patterns and temperatures, causing prolonged droughts or extreme flooding.

Invasive species

Invasive species displace native ones and make it harder for wetlands to recover.

Disappearing wetlands

The numbers are alarming: more than 35% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared. In Mexico, the loss is even greater—around 60%.

Opportunities for recovery

Constructed wetlands are created to treat wastewater or restore degraded areas. They cannot replace natural wetlands, but they can mimic some of their functions.

Restoring the natural flow

Restoring a wetland means bringing back its natural water flow, removing dams or drainage channels, controlling invasive species, and replanting native vegetation.

Healing ecosystems

It also involves reducing pollution, transforming harmful agricultural practices, and promoting nature-based solutions.

Working together for conservation

Community participation is key. When people get involved, and collaborate wetlands have a future.

Benefits of healthy wetlands

Restoring wetlands improves water quality, prevents flooding, protects biodiversity, and creates spaces to learn, enjoy, and connect with nature.
