Exploring Mexican Identity

The exhibition Between Threads and Grains featured 22 glass pieces inspired by the rebozo, corn, and the grocery bag, icons of Mexican culture in the Piece of the Month Room at the Museum of Popular Art.

Glass Transformation

Using techniques such as glassblowing and fusing, the artist Caya Ponce de León transforms glass into a living material that combines technical precision with artistic sensitivity.

The section dedicated to the rebozo, a kind of typical shawl, evokes themes such as motherhood and tradition, highlighting the connection between textiles and memory.

The pieces convey an emotional dimension of the rebozo as a symbol of care, heritage, and feminine connection.

The mirror placed in front of glass corn cobs invites viewers to see themselves reflected in maize — a central symbol of identity and Mesoamerican worldview.

Corn is represented as sacred food, a symbol of life, abundance, and cultural belonging.

The El Mandado series transforms market phrases into glass sculptures that celebrate everyday life and popular culture. (Mandado is a common word in Latin American Spanish to refer to grocery shopping).
