Commuters No.1 (1992) by Rattanarit ChuntharangsriArt Centre Silpakorn University
Rattanarit Chuntharangsri, using mixed media art, illustrates his feelings and perspectives towards the exhausting lives of bus commuters through long faces in a crowded and gloomy environment.
The artist ensures each line captures movement and paints black on a number of commuters to depict emotional suppression.
Dark, unsaturated colors in the background are balanced by lighter, brighter colors in the front, thereby spotlighting commuters’ emotions.
While black emphasizes the dark emotions forcefully buried underneath, the most prominent colors–red, orange, and yellow–represent the desire for an emotional outburst.
In contrast, cooler shades, though in a small amount, symbolizes stress relief and isolation.
Through the numbers on license plates along with the clock, the journey, like time, continues perpetually.
The artist deliberately presented everyday life amid the loneliness of the city. Consequently, intangible pressure and unspoken emotions are strongly present in the artwork.
