The 2022 Image Equity Fellowship

The works shown in this collection are part of a group exhibition entitled Through Fire and Thunder, whose images—created by the inaugural cohort of the Image Equity Fellowship— explore 20 diverse Fellows' communities through the lenses of identity, belonging, movement and migration, coming of age and home.

A curated selection of images from Through Fire and Thunder will be open for public view (free and open to all) at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY on Sat 5/13 and Sun 5/14, from 12-6pm ET.

These 20 U.S.-based Fellows were selected from a pool of 1400+ applicants, each receiving $20,000 in unrestricted funds, intimate mentorship and dedicated workshops led by industry experts. Over 6 months, each Fellow created a photo-centric project that explores urgent, untold stories of their communities with dignity and nuance.

The Fellowship launched in 2022 as a collaborative effort between four organizations committed to radically diversifying the creative industry (Aperture, Creative Theory Agency, FOR FREEDOMS & FREE THE WORK). Its aim is to support the next generation of image-makers of color and the expansion of a more representative fine and commercial arts fields.
