Wildlife
Images of a wide range of wildlife on the Nuevo Tolima panel showcase the biodiversity of the Amazon. Here, large paintings of a capybara (top right) and a feline with exaggerated paws (lower left) dominate the centre of the panel.
Camelid
This one-of-a-kind painting of a camelid may represent the extinct Paleolama which inhabited the region in the Ice Age.
Salt lick flower
This painting is known as the "salt lick flower”. At first glance a stylised eight-petalled flower, closer inspection shows eight caimans arranged symmetrically around a salt lick. Animals which usually fight come together in peace at natural salt licks.
Textile designs
Nuevo Tolima is dominated by geometric shapes known as racimos (clusters), formed by a horizontal stick from which woven textiles appear to hang.
These designs could perhaps be patterns for weaving utensils out of cords and wickerwork. Some of the designs shown here can be found in the basketry and weavings made by Orinoco and Amazonian indigenous people today.
Sinuous snakes
Lower on the panel, two large anaconda snakes appear in silhouette, their bodies branching in two like two converging rivers.
