Pelé goes out of the World Cup
The second fixture saw Brazil face the former Czechoslovakia in the first of two encounters between the two teams in this tournament. The match ended 0-0, but Pelé limped off the field with a groin injury that would put him out of the World Cup.

Controversy
During the match, Chilean referee Sergio Bustamente waved away a penalty appeal from the Spanish players and wrongly disallowed a Spanish goal from an overhead kick.

In their semifinal against hosts Chile in Santiago, Vavá and Garrincha were again Brazil’s key players, scoring all four of their team’s goals in a 4-2 win. Brazil were in their second consecutive World Cup final.

After scoring his country’s two opening goals, Garrincha was sent off late in the game for kneeing Chile’s Eladio Rojas.
