The "Ca' Granda": the Heartquarter of University of Milan
Since its origins in the heart of the city, the magnificent Renaissance building of Via Festa del Perdono has been the home of the University of Milan since the Second World War.

The Ca' Granda was born in 1456 for the will of Francesco Sforza to found a "hospitale grando", as a sign of thanks to God for the conquest of the Duchy.

The project was entrusted to the architect Antonio Averlino, called "Filarete", who worked there until 1465.

The Major Hospital was conceived to assist patients of all social and economic conditions; it immediately stood out for being at the forefront and for the quality of reception and care, so much so as to encourage legacies and donations of wealthy and less well-off benefactors.

Thanks to the generous bequest of the merchant and banker Pietro Carcano that turns out, a sort of second founder of the Ca' Granda, from 1624 the works for the construction of the Cortile Maggiore resumed, mainly by the famous architect Francesco Maria Richini.

In the niches of the important Richinian entrance portal are the stone statues of Saint Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, of Saint Charles, archbishop of the city, of the Archangel Gabriel and of the Virgin Mary, to whom the Ospedale Maggiore has always been dedicated.

Thanks to the Carcano bequest and to the substantial donation, in 1797, of the notary Giuseppe Macchi it was possible to realize the new left cruise.

This wing of the building - after the rigorous reconstruction that has affected the whole Ca' Granda, followed by the bombings of 1943 and curated, in particular, by Piero Portaluppi and Liliana Grassi - was destined for Educational Sector.
VUMM-Virtual UniMi Museum, was conceived, designed, built, and released by the Università degli Studi di Milano.
