The Circulatory System

Blood circulation (2017) by Città della ScienzaCittà della Scienza

The cardiovascular system includes a circulating liquid (blood), a pump (heart) and a system of transport conduits (the network of blood vessels: veins, arteries, capillaries).

The blood circulates in a dense network of blood vessels, consisting of arteries, veins and capillaries thanks to a particular pump: the heart.

The heart is a hollow organ divided into four chambers: two atria and two ventricles (one on each side), connected to each other by numerous valves that regulate blood flow so that it is unidirectional. At birth the heart weighs about 20-21 grams, while in adults it reaches 250-300 grams.

The heart is located in the chest, behind the sternum that protects it, positioned slightly to the left (the left lung makes room for it) and resting on the diaphragm.

It has a conical shape and is composed of overlapping tissues: a bag that protects it (the pericardium), the epicardium, the endocardium that constitutes the internal walls of the heart and the myocardium, the real "muscle" of the heart.

Bionautilus (2017) by Città della ScienzaCittà della Scienza

SUPER-EXHIBIT “BIONAUTILUS”

Bionautilus simulates a virtual journey within onepart of the human cardio-circulatory system for two passengers. The digital experience begins with the miniaturization of the vehicle containing the two passengers and its insertion into a human artery. Inside the vehicle, passengers will have a joystick with which to activate the external thrusters.

This activity will make the experience alive and totally immersive thanks to the interaction with the simulation table located below the Bionautilus, which will transform the commands given by the user into real physical movements. During the journey the passengers will meet the cells that make up the blood and some pathogens (Shigella, almonella,Treponema, etc.) which must be promptly destroyed, using the "weapons" available to Bionautilus. The experience will last about 4 minutes and passive users will be able to observe both the journey and the expressions of the two active users from external monitors.

"BLOOD CIRCULATION"

In this exhibit a hydraulic pump (a heart model)introduces a colored liquid into a circuit of transparent tubes to simulate how blood is pumped from the heart.

The visitor can activate the pump and transfer blood from the heart to the lungs and vessels. Inside the heart, the visitor can observe the dilation of the atrium and ventricles during the action of the pump.

"YOUR HEART BEATS"

In a circular position there is a sensor and a display case with sand and a pumping system that makes the sand dance to the rhythm of the heart rate.

The visitor in front of an exhibit table can sit and touch a bar with sensors: the sensors measure the heart rate and send this information to the pumping system that begins to make the sand "dance" that begins at the rhythm of the heart of the visitor.
