McMillan Memorial Library
This library was built in Nairobi, Kenya by Lady Lucy McMillan as a memorial to her husband, Sir William Northrup McMillan in 1931.
Access to the McMillan Memorial Library was restricted to white users in the first twenty seven years since its inception in 1931.
With Kenya on the brink of gaining independence from Britain, these racial restrictions were lifted, starting in 1958.
The McMillan Memorial Library became a touchstone in Kenya's cultural scene in the following years.
In 1931, the first chief librarian of the McMillan Memorial Library was Mr B. J. Barton-Eckett from Britain. Currently, librarians from Nairobi City County run the libraries.
Founded in 2017 and rooted in a love for literature and storytelling, Book Bunk partnered with Nairobi City County to lead the restoration efforts of the three McMillan Memorial Library branches.
