Hopchytsya on the map of the 18th century

Map of the Bratslav Voivodeship, 1790

The map of the Bratslav Voivodeship was created for the civil-military commission of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, thanks to the efforts of the last Kyiv voivode and assessor of the Vinnytsia Starosty, Antoni Protazy (Prot) Jaczek Potocki.

The original map is preserved in the National Library of Poland.

The first mention of Hopchytsya

This is the first known map on which the village of Hopchytsya is marked. On it, we see the name of the village in Polish as Hopczycza (Hopchytsya), located near the mouth of the Ros River.

Hopchytsya and its surroundings

Not all the surrounding villages that exist at present were marked on the map of 1790.

Hopchytsya and its surroundings

Just like now, a road passes through Hopchytsya heading north towards Zarudyntsy, Ruzhyn, and Bilylivka. Additionally, a dashed line indicates a field road toward Bilashky, Smarzhynets, and Monchyn villages.

There is a false legend that the village once had the name "Haichytsia" because, supposedly, it had many groves. However, this is just a beautiful legend, as all known historical documents refer to the village only as Hopchytsya.

"The estate, aside from the village of Hopchytsya, has no other designation," - stated in the documents of the Charter of 1865.
