Hohoe Municipal is one of the 25 administrative districts of the Volta Region of Ghana. It was carved out of the former Kpando District. In this series of mixed media work, the artist Winfred Nana Amaoh focuses on the face areas of some of the community-dwelling women.

Artist Winfred Nana Amoah chats about his practice, hometown of Hohoe, and the encounters with his work participants.

Winfred Nana Amoah was born in 1996 in Hohoe, Ghana. His media of practice include acrylic paintings, textiles, used credit cards, newspapers, and plastic bags.

“My mum has a beautiful smile and it has always given me hope. I paint women smiling and laughing because these facial expressions bring us joy and happiness.”

“The women have no one to tell their stories to. I want to stand up for them as an artist and tell their stories. Their stories are also part of my story.”

This painting is based on a portrait of one of Winfred Nana Amoah's friends. The friend suffers from bipolar disorder and was in pain at the time.

Winfred Nana Amoah painted the face of the woman blue in part to disguise her face. The colour also symoolizes being in 'agony'.
