When you first enter the Gallery, your eye is caught by the 20 ft-wide digital Beacon that uses whimsical stop motion to pull live visitor creations from ArtLens Studio, Exhibition, and App, and features works of art from across the Museum's collection.

ArtLens Studio

From there, you can venture into the ArtLens Studio, where visitors foster relationships with the collection by engaging with details. As they make connections, they practice skills that will enhance their experience with art.

The Studio includes the Reveal and Zoom wall, where visitors kinetically engage their bodies to reveal artworks or zoom into an artwork in great detail, as well as the Create Studio, which allows guests to make their own digital artworks. The creative possibilities are endless.

The Exhibition seeks to push the boundaries of innovation by providing visitors with the tools to look more closely at art. Guests engage with interactives that intertwine innovative gesture-sensing, eye-tracking, and facial recognition with a selection of CMA masterworks.

The adjacent room leads to the 40-foot interactive and multitouch ArtLens Wall. This digital visualization of the collection provides a snapshot of the Museum, allowing visitors to browse all artworks currently on view.

Every 40 seconds the Wall rotates through the art, displaying curated selections of artworks grouped in dozens of ways—by type, theme, purpose, shape, color—so you can see how different artworks in CMA's collection are related across cultures and time periods.

If you see something you like, you can touch an artwork to find out what it is and where it is in the Museum. Select the medium, time period, or culture above the artwork to get from ancient figurines to contemporary architecture all without moving from your spot!

Downloading CMA's ArtLens App brings the experience full circle.  With the App, you can set your mobile device on designated docks in the ArtLens Exhibition and at the ArtLens Wall to then save your favorite pieces and personal creations to your phone or tablet.

The scanning feature on the App uses Augmented Reality to provide additional curatorial and interpretive content for certain artworks. Each month, additional artworks are made scannable so visitors always have the opportunity to explore and learn more.
