Who’s behind 2038?

A collaborative project between experts and creatives

2038 is based on the idea of collaboration instead of competition.

True for many professions and industries, the social and technological challenges imply a radical change for architecture. However, architects don't seem to understand their role in this transformation or aren't able to communicate it to the wider public.

Beyond the paradigm of the free market and emotionally loaded concepts such as sustainability, security, comfort and innovation, architects can actively change the future by thinking, planning and building change. They can architect the future.

How?

Through dialogue between disciplines.

Part of 2038’s concept was to ask experts to tell their story as they were living in this very near future. A time in which the system has changed for the better. The only rule was to be serious about it: committed and transparent in argumentation and humble in their approach.

Sounds naïve? Well, the challenges of our time cannot be overcome alone. 2038 is a platform to make the different answers of experts from different fields heard. Architecture, Art, Ecology, Economy, Philosophy, Politics, Science and Technology.

In the interstice of disciplines where themes and interests overlap, architects can take a new role in thinking about architecture beyond the built object. Systemically and holistically: in time and space. In 2038, we speak of “architecting”.

Architecting means designing systems that can withstand crises, transformation and change. It means using digital tools to negotiate how we want to live; understanding living space as a common good; reconnecting the cycles of human and non-human (eco)systems.

Architecture is the process of outputting something that contributes to the future of the system, rather than just the architectural object itself. It is active „to architect“, which means to think, design, plan, build, speak about, and construct social relations in space.

Already today we find projects and models of these alternative approaches, beyond disciplinary boundaries. It is their voices and stories that 2038 wants to tell.

Already today we find projects and models of these alternative approaches, beyond disciplinary boundaries. Together, we want to reduce the complexity and tell a story, how everything went well again in 2038. And how architects, amongst others, are part of it.

2038 weaves these voices and perspectives into one historical narrative, in which experts explain how alternative models became systemic answers – a new system that allows for local ways of living while creating global equity.

Today we can already find projects and models of these alternative approaches, beyond disciplinary boundaries. Together, we want to reduce the complexity and tell a story, how everything went well again in 2038. And how architects, amongst others, are part of it.

2038 is a non-profit company with the goal to promote architectural discourse across disciplinary boundaries. 2038 talks to experts from various fields and shares their views and opinions, in partly edited form. 2038 does not claim the approaches, contents and theses of the experts and does everything to quote and name them correctly and in detail. Should this exceptionally not be the case, just write us an email (press@2038.xyz) and we will immediately update the information accordingly.
