Judy Chicago

is renowned as an artist, author, feminist, educator and intellectual whose career spans five decades. She began her "Atmospheres" series in the late 1960s, working with pyrotechnics to produce complex firework pieces and presented as ephemeral, site-specific performances intended to transform and soften the landscape. As an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the physical experience of these works, "Judy Chicago Rainbow AR”, the artist’s first virtual artwork, commissioned by LAS, builds upon and continues her celebrated series "Atmospheres". Global audiences are invited to experience this latest Smoke Sculpture™ performance in Augmented Reality (AR).

Produced in close collaboration with LAS and experience designers International Magic, Chicago has created a new form of her Smoke Sculptures™, which was brought into the digital realm. During this uncertain time when public gatherings are limited and our relationships with personal and public spaces are changing, "Judy Chicago Rainbow AR" is accessible to audiences wherever they are based, allowing them to have their own site-specific experience, activating and ‘beautifying’ their own surroundings. The artwork is available as an app, which can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store and will be compatible with a broad range of mobile devices.

"It has been thrilling to work with LAS and International Magic on a new way to bring the experience of my Smoke Sculptures™ to audiences around the world who might not be familiar with my long-standing efforts to soften and feminise the often-harsh, patriarchal world around us. At this moment in time, it seems even more important to offer the opportunity to bathe our environments with light, art and beauty in order to inspire hope and through a visual metaphor, suggest the possibility of positive change" – Judy Chicago

“I started making these pieces in the first place because I was very interested in disappearing the masculine environment; obscuring it and softening it.”

“There was a moment when the smoke began to clear, but a haze lingered. And the whole world was feminised — if only for a moment.”

“I believe in art that is connected to real human feeling, that extends itself beyond the limits of the art world to embrace all people who are striving for alternatives in an increasingly dehumanized world”

Amira Gad, Head of Programmes, LAS:

"We are grateful to Judy for having accepted our invitation and to International Magic for being up for the challenge of supporting the artist to create her first virtual work. Bringing her iconic atmospheres series into the digital realm as a continuation of the series not only offers new perspectives to transform our environment, it’s also symbolic of togetherness, solidarity and harmony."

Bettina Kames, Director, LAS:

"We are excited to present 'Judy Chicago Rainbow AR', the first virtual artwork commissioned by LAS. 'Judy Chicago Rainbow AR' is part of a commitment by LAS to support artists to create art using new technologies. Having launched in 2019 with an exhibition by Refik Anadol at Kraftwerk Berlin, we work closely with artists and commission works that stimulate new visions of the present and future, using the medium of light across a broad range of practices."

Adam Rodgers, Creative Director, International Magic:

“Our aim is to strike a balance between being true to Judy's art, while also pushing the opportunities and boundaries presented to us by the technology. In many ways, this project was a constant dialogue between art and technology. We identified the unique behaviours and aesthetics of Judy's physical 'Atmosphere' artworks, and then we applied technology to simulate these behaviours and play with them to truthfully capture the original intent of the work.”
