These silk satin side-lacing boots, made by Gundry & Sons were worn by Queen Victoria. The inside of the boots are made of leather and starch cotton. These materials move in different ways.

When the boots were worn, the silk being the weaker of the fabrics was subject to damage. Textile conservator Rosie Chamberlin describes the materials, process and techniques used to treat and conserve these historic boots in the following video.
