La escena está ambientada en el taller de la calle de La Condamine que Bazille comparte con Renoir del 1° de enero de 1868 al 15 de mayo de 1870. En el centro se encuentra Bazille, con la paleta en la mano. Manet, precisamente, con sombrero, observa el lienzo colocado encima del caballete. A la derecha, Edmond Maître, amigo de Bazille, está sentado frente al piano. Los tres personajes de la izquierda son más difícilmente identificables. Se puede tratar de Monet, de Renoir y quizás Emile Zola, o también de Zacharie Astruc...
