Mexica / Aztec Art

Precolumbian Mexica/Aztec art from many museum collections. Mexica is the term that the people known as the Aztecs called themselves in their Nahuatl language. The name Mexico comes from Mexica.  The Mexica empire reached its height around 1427 AD and was still in its classic period when Spaniards led by Cortes landed on the Gulf Coast in 1519 AD.
