Neoclassicism was a widespread and influential movement in painting and the other visual arts that began in the 1760s, reached its height in the 1780s and '90s, and lasted until the 1840s and '50s. In painting it generally took the form of an emphasis on austere linear design in the depiction of classical themes and subject matter, using archaeologically correct settings and costumes. Neoclassicism arose partly as a reaction against the sensuous and frivolously decorative Rococo style that had dominated European art from the 1720s on. But an even more profound stimulus was the new and more scientific interest in classical antiquity that arose in the 18th century. Two predominant artists during this time period were Jacques-Louis David and Johan Joseph Zoffany.

Marat Assassinated, Jacques-Louis David, 1793, From the collection of: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
This first piece by David is captivating and breathtaking. You can see the pain in his face and the detail in this painting is flawless. It feels like I'm looking at a photo.
Bonaparte Crossing the Grand Saint-Bernard Pass, Jacques Louis David, 19th century, From the collection of: Palace of Versailles
The second piece by David is a very famous painting of Napoleon Bonaparte. I love the intricate details in not only the centerpiece, but the background as well.
The Combat of Diomedes,1776, Jacques-Louis David, 1776, From the collection of: Albertina Museum
In the third piece by David, I am consumed with emotion. The gloomy skies, though black and white, leave a feeling that color could not. This painting is unbelievable impressive the amount of time he must have spent is remarkable.
The Coronation of the Emperor and Empress, Jacques Louis David, 1808-1822, From the collection of: Palace of Versailles
The last piece by David is yet again a lovely painting. He is extremely talented at getting a vast variety of details into one piece. I can see each piece of this as though it is actually in front of me.
Tribuna of the Uffizi, Johan Zoffany, 1772 - 1777, From the collection of: Royal Collection Trust, UK
The first piece by Zoffany is a lovely painted scene. The detail is beautiful and the amount of things and references included into this piece is amazing. I am impressed.
David Garrick and his wife Eva Maria Garrick (née Veigel) by his Temple to Shakespeare at Hampton, Johan Joseph Zoffany RA, 1733–1810, German, active in Britain (from 1760), ca. 1762, From the collection of: Yale Center for British Art
The second piece by Zoffany is a lovely painting. I feel like this piece shouts Neoclassical. I love the soft but firm realisticness and the contrasting happy scene with gloomy skies.
The Gore Family with George, third Earl Cowper, Johan Joseph Zoffany RA, 1733–1810, German, active in Britain (from 1760), ca. 1775, From the collection of: Yale Center for British Art
The third piece by Zoffany is another lovely piece. This painting is subtle but plentiful with details. It is a family scene but I enjoy how it is amost two in one because of the painting in the painting.
Self-portrait as David with the head of Goliath, Johan Zoffany, 1756, From the collection of: National Gallery of Victoria
The last piece by Zoffany is a vast portrait painting. The realisticness of the painting is immense and commendable. This represents the neoclassical art period very well.
