In this gallery I'm going to be showing the 3 types of landscapes. Impressionistic Landscape meaning landscape that look realistic, but at the same time unrealistic. "This is achieved using several methods, including separating the foreground from the background using soft focus". Abstract Landscape which pays more attention to background and foreground. Then the last one is Representational Landscape which is looking for landscapes that are realistic. I'm going to be showing all these things and paintings

Raccoon Up A Persimmon Tree, Palmer C. Hayden, From the collection of: The Museum of African American Art
In this picture you see here is a forest with the dog trying to chase after a raccoon stuck in a tree. When looking at this portrait you can see it’s formal elements are color and texture. From looking at this picture there’s blue and black in the background as more of a dark shade of night while the yellow and green shows little highlights below going around the picture, red seems to be the most vibrant color that stands out. In looking at the texture it looks like the environment is made out of charcoal when really it’s actually an oil painting. When looking at the principals it has variety and focus. The variety is the green plants going around the picture while the main focus is the dog staring at the raccoon.
Mt. Penglai (Mountain of Immortals), Yokoyama Taikan, 1948, From the collection of: Adachi Museum of Art
In this painting you can see the village and birds surrounded by landscape of the nature and mountains. This painting has the formal elements of lines and texture. When looking at the foggy mist it looks all wavy, while the mountains have some diagonal and horizontal curves on the right side of the painting. The texture in the mountains look rough in detail, while looking at the fog that’s going throughout the landscape looks smooth. This painting also has principles such as proportion and movement. I say proportion because compared to looking at a small town you can see a huge mountain going far from a distance from a sea of clouds. The movement in the painting I would say would be the birds moving through the mist.
Rainy Season in the Tropics, Frederic Edwin Church, 1866, From the collection of: de Young museum
This painting shows a landscape of a forest below with some people on the right side and mountains that have green grass in some parts of the picture with a river and a sky on top. As you can see this painting is very detailed to the point where looking at the texture of the mountains it looks roughly smooth, while the colors of the trees and the rainbow are very vibrant in detailed in the painting. It also has proportion of a three dimensional look to it based on the sizes of each section of the land for example the mountain left and the forest on the right look up close but in the middle in a diagonal style it looks like it’s going farther and farther away to the point where you can’t see anymore land. Just looking at the cloudy mist to me it’s a sign of movement that goes around throughout the painting.
Looking Down Yosemite Valley, California, Albert Bierstadt, 1865, From the collection of: Birmingham Museum of Art
This landscape has trees, mountains, a reflective pond with clouds and a sunrise. When looking at this image it has a sense of light and darkness judging by the shadings of the picture where it’s supposed to look like a shadow, while the sun is only shining in some parts of the land. I also noticed there’s a dimensional look of proportion when it comes to the size of the mountains there a slight distance while the land up close scenes smaller and spread out.
Wooded Landscape with Horsemen and Cattle, Abraham Govaerts, around 1620, From the collection of: Bonnefantenmuseum
This painting has a landscape full of people, animals, and a pond. This is what I would consider an abstract landscape because the looks at the details like the tree branches are bent in an unusual shape and people as part of the main focus. You can also tell it has some depth to it.
Mountain Landscape with Waterfall, Kerstiaen Keuninck the Elder, around 1605-1610, From the collection of: Bonnefantenmuseum
This shows the nature of hills and valleys with some buildings and a person with cattle. This would be an Impressionistic Landscape even though this is supposed to look realistic at the same time it is also unrealistic because it’s using elements of using light techniques to show some parts of the details what the viewer would want to see.
The Ponds of Gylieu, Charles-François Daubigny (French, b.1817, d.1878), 1853, From the collection of: Cincinnati Art Museum
This shows a huge pond with two birds, green land, and a sky with clouds on top. This will be considered an abstract landscape because the foreground focus is the land and the pond because it shows the most detail that a viewer would pay attention to, such as the reflection of the dark shadow of the trees.
River Landscape with a Castle on a High Cliff, Jacob van Ruisdael (Dutch, b.1628-1629, d.1682), 1670s, From the collection of: Cincinnati Art Museum
This painting has a river with people canoeing next to two islands with hills and trees including having two buildings looking far away in the picture. It also has a blue sky with clouds. This picture I would consider abstract because the foreground focus I would say would be the two islands and the trees
Blue Hole, Flood Waters, Little Miami River, Robert S. Duncanson (American, b.1821, d.1872), 1851, From the collection of: Cincinnati Art Museum
In this painting there’s a pond in the forest where people are fishing. Judging by the detail in this painting I’d have to say this is a representational landscape because it’s not using any special bright colors or light affects. It has a more real depth of how nature is supposed to look like realistically.
(Autumn Landscape), Asher Brown Durand, Original Source: http://www.nps.gov/museum/exhibits/mabi/exb/HudsonRiverSchool/DurandAutumn2813_300.html
This forest is in autumn. In this painting you can also see that there’s blue sky and clouds and a traveler with his horse carrying the wagon. I would consider this impressionistic landscape because the colors are a little bit vibrant to look realistic the lighting in the background has an unnatural filtering look to it.
