Welcome to the Photograph Gallery! The second gallery in this museum. This gallery houses five individual works, which each are unique in their own way. The first piece, immediately on your left is Nan and Brian in Bed, taken in New York City. Until recently, much like many works in this collection, it was housed in The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Taken in 1983, the picture portrays a man and a woman lying in bed, and Brian is smoking. In the top right corner, another picture hangs on the wall. The entire picture has a yellow shine to it, indicating that the sun is rising. Observe the expression on Nan's face as she looks at Brian. When looking at the picture, try to form your own story. In the back left of this gallery we have our second piece, Study of Perspective - Hong Kong. This piece was also held in the MoMA and was taken sometime between 1995 to 2003. This photograph was taken by Ai Weiwei and portrays the photographer extending his middle finger towards the city of Hong Kong. When observing this piece, recall Hong Kong's history during the time period. In 1997, Hong Kong was transferred from British Rule to Chinese, leading to tension between the city and it's rulers. Straight ahead of us hangs Millerntor Stadium from the Heiligengeistfeld. The stadium in the image is located in St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany and houses their regional soccer team FC St. Pauli. For those of you who know anything about St. Pauli in Germany, it is the German home of prostitution and drugs, and boasts the original home of one of the greatest bands in the world: The Beatles. Look at all the faces on the wall of the stadium and the floor, the supporters of FC St. Pauli. Our fourth photograph is Pony Boy by Catherine Jansen, and is my personal favorite piece. Jansen has spent years traveling through India taking photographs, and she came to realize that through her photography she could meet incredible people, and that's what she did. Jansen has a technique where she merges photographs from different times and different angles, capturing dimension and time within her two dimensional photograph. Our final photograph in the gallery, hanging on your right, is Kailash #75. Also one of favorite pieces hanging in the gallery. Mount Kailash is a peak in Western Tibet, and is worshiped as a holy place in four different religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon, the indigenous religion of Tibet. This shot is taken along the pilgrimage route on the Mountain. The photograph was printed directly onto watercolor paper.
