The artist was a friend of the greatest painter of German Romanticism, Caspar David Friedrich. Dahl painted only landscapes, initially inspired by Dutch art, and after his stay in Italy, they were also based on direct nature studies. He is considered as the artist who discovered the beauty of the landscape of Northern Europe, and acclaimed as the creator of the modern Norwegian style of painting. It was Dahl who bought the wooden Wang Church (built in Vang, in Norway) which was threatened with demolition, and later transferred to the Karkonosze mountains.
