On the left-hand panel of the diptych, a figure of the Virgin is being crowned by an angel, and she is flanked by two angels holding a candelabra. On the right-hand panel, Christ is depicted on the cross with the Virgin on the left and St John on the right. The depictions on both panels are worked remarkably deeply into the ivory. The gilded hinges with engraved scrollwork are of a later date, replacing the original hinges. The folding ivory panels were intended for private devotion. Their practical small size meant they could be transported easily and set up for prayer at any time.
