Lohans, or Arhats in Sanskrit meaning “perfect saints”, were disciples of the Buddha. Attaining an advanced state of spiritual enlightenment, they were revered as the protectors of Buddhist law. Generally represented in groups, lohans are depicted as engaged in thought, alert, and self-confident. Nagasena is seen sitting down, he is leisurely and content. He is known for his knowledge and humour.
