Fragments of a painted polyptych - Saint Bartholomew

Francesco Morone

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The panels with the saints Bartholomew and Francis formed the predella of a Crucifixion, signed by Francesco Morone and dated 1498, which was originally located in the chapel of the Cross, in the church of San Bernardino.

The interpretation of saint Bartholomew is based on odd, harsh chromatic contrasts, shiny yellow and violet against a black background, a perfect example of the unusual colorism of the Veronese school, completely different from that of Venice.
