The work consists of two large axes crossed one over the other, so that the horizontal table fits behind the vertical one. The cross has four trilobed medallions at the ends and the lower one was connected to a suppedaneo, to anchor the work at the base. The side medallions portray saints Peter and Paul, the upper one depicts the pelican feeding its chicks (the symbol of Christ spilling his own blood for the redemption of men) and the lower one represents the Golgotha with Adam’s skull.
