Portrait of Max Liebermann

Veth painted the famous painter’s portrait in Berlin. It was, as Veth later recalled, quite a challenge. He learned a lot, much more ‘than from the approval offered by less critical individuals’. Veth and Liebermann had become friends in Laren in 1886. The German painter was very fond of the Netherlands and visited every year.
