The paintings of the series to which belongs Salón con escalera evoke the backdrops used as backgrounds for portrait photos in an old studio in Tucuman. The allegoric backgrounds, as they were called, represented palace-like spaces covered with curtains, staircases, balconies, and ornaments. Those were anonymous paintings which didn’t have any artistic pretension and the technique aimed to create an optic effect, a so-called trompe l’oeil.
I am interested in those references as a repertoire of fantastic sceneries related to the city and its imaginary. Sceneries that call to fantasy and create the illusion of being somewhere else. As if they were the old version of a CGI background, or the filters that we use today for our video-calls.
