Born in the 3rd century CE in Gaul (Narbonne in present France), St. Sebastian was persecuted during the reign of Emperor Diocletian by being shot with arrows. St. Sebastian was invoked against the plague since the middle ages. Many chapels, requiring numerous images showing his martyrdom were raised in his honour in Portuguese territories.
