Bata Shoe Museum Toronto

Bata Shoe Museum Toronto

Toronto, Canada

When Bata Shoe Museum Founder Sonja Bata first began collecting footwear in the 1940s, she never expected that her unending quest for exceptional artefacts would result in an unparalleled collection and an internationally acclaimed museum. In 1995, the Bata Shoe Museum opened its doors to the public in its award-winning building designed by celebrated Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama.

Featuring a permanent display reflecting on the history of footwear, the museum also has three changing exhibitions and exciting programming, ensuring that each visit offers a new experience. Boasting a world-class collection of more than 13,000 artefacts spanning over 4,500 years of history, the museum is committed to being an internationally recognized centre for footwear research. Maintaining and displaying the Bata Shoe Museum’s collection through innovative exhibitions, the museum also sponsors field research and publishes information about the cultural, historical and sociological value of footwear. Every shoe tells a story. There are thousands to discover at the Bata Shoe Museum.
