The Naval Museum is a state-owned and state-managed institution of national category. It belongs to the Ministry of Defense, under the organic dependence of the Admiral Chief of Naval Staff. The museum is located in the city of Madrid, sharing location with the General Headquarters of the Spanish Navy. Six branch museums have organic dependence on the Naval Museum: the Naval Museum ‘Torre del Oro’ (Sevilla), the Archive-Museum ‘Álvaro de Bazán’ in Viso del Marqués (Ciudad Real), the Naval Museum of Cartagena (Murcia), the Naval Museum of Ferrol (A Coruña), the Naval Museum of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) and the Naval Museum of San Fernando (Cádiz). The Naval Museum and its six branch museums work together to show visitors the history of the Spanish Navy and its contribution to the institutional, social, cultural, economic and scientific progress of Spain; as well as for the development of a culture of national security and defense and the promotion of research, conservation and communication of maritime history and its tangible and intangible heritage.
