Museu Casa da Moeda

The Casa da Moeda Museum (Portuguese Mint Museum) is a digital project by the National Mint. Its collection has two main sources. The first is the Casa da Moeda vault collection, started in 1777 by King José I and the Marquis of Pombal. The second source is the personal collection of King Luís, originally exhibited at the Ajuda Palace and studied by A. C. Teixeira de Aragão. The history is consolidated through Sebastião Betâmio de Almeida, who organised the Numismatic Office in 1863. Later, in 1924, the royal collection was transferred to the Mint. In that same year, President Manuel Teixeira Gomes inaugurated the Portuguese Numismatic Museum. The institution became the National Museum in 1933 and was studied by curators such as Pedro Batalha Reis and Damião Peres. In 1946, under the presidency of Óscar Carmona, the museum moved into the Casa da Moeda building in Arco do Cego, Lisbon. The museum eventually closed to the public in 1978 and the collection was moved to the Casa-Forte in 1987. Finally, in 2017, a digital project dedicated to numismatics and medallic art was launched, which is accessible to all. The Casa da Moeda Museum has one of the largest and most complete collections of its kind in Portugal.
