Synopsis

After many years of marriage, Walter and Madge have grown apart. They don’t even bother to argue anymore.  Walter lives on the floor, and Madge lives on the ceiling; or if you ask Madge, it’s Walter who lives on the ceiling.

When Walter comes across a long-lost memento of their wedding day, he tries to reignite their old romance. But their comfortable equilibrium comes crashing down, and Walter and Madge must overcome their old habits or face the disintegration of their marriage.

The Inspiration for Head Over Heels by Timothy Rekart

The idea for "Head Over Heels" jumped out at me from a 1632 painting by Rembrandt called The Philosopher in Meditation. There’s a spiral staircase in the corner that is symmetrical, as if it could also be used by someone living on the ceiling.

I imagined two people sharing a staircase like that and began to wonder who they were and how they ended up that way. These characters developed into Walter and Madge, a married couple who have grown apart over the years.

Head Over Heals Set Progress with designer Eléonore Cremonese (2011) by Hana KitaseiNational Film and Television School

Head Over Heels Set Design by Eléonore Cremonese

We chose a midcentury modern look, which allowed us to play with the horizontal symmetry of the interiors, and suggested that it was built in the sixties, when our characters got married. But to give a more vintage feel we also borrowed from Frank Lloyd Wright’s wooden interiors.

Because the action of the film plays out vertically the camera would frequently adopt a high angle. This meant that the interior design needed layers in vertical depth, as well as horizontal. In addition, the floor would be more prominent than usual.

So the construction features thousands of hand-cut floorboards and handcrafted scale furniture to add texture to the surroundings and enhance the film’s homey atmosphere.
