What is the Cervantes Institute?

In March 1991, the Spanish Government inaugurated the Cervantes Institute, a public body linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union, and Cooperation.

It was founded with the aim of universally promoting the teaching, study, and use of Spanish, and contributing to the promotion of Hispanic cultures abroad.

Outside of Spain, the Cervantes Institute is the official reference institution for teaching and learning the Spanish language, as well as the other co-official languages of Spain.

Today it has a brand of quality and prestige, and its initiatives are aimed at promoting Hispanic culture.

After three decades of activity, the Cervantes Institute has 100 offices spread over all five continents, consolidating itself as an instrument of cultural diplomacy.

What does the Cervantes Institute do?

The Cervantes Institute organizes courses for learning Spanish as a foreign language, and also trains the teachers who are in charge of this teaching.

It organizes the exams of the SIELE certificate (International Service for the Evaluation of the Spanish Language) and those of the DELE diploma, which officially accredits the knowledge of Spanish according to the levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The test of Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain (CCSE) for those who want to obtain residency in Spain is also carried out by the Cervantes Institute.

At its different offices, activities related to literature, art, cinema, music, theater, dance, science, and history are organized in different formats in order to share the culture of Spain and Latin America with the whole world.
