Text from " Frida Kahlo's Diary"

"Meager amount, almost zero, but it is reaching for the most urgent needs: feeder, clothing, contributions, cigarettes and the occasional bottle of Cuervo Añejo Tequila, whose cost is $ 3.50 (per liter)".
Quote from Juan Gustavo Cobo Borda, "Frida Kahlo's diary".

Tequila is today a national symbol, and has been and is the reason for multiple artistic manifestations: music, literature, cinema and photography. Tequila and the landscape of the beautiful agave plant have also been a source of inspiration for visual artists at various times in recent history. Currently, contemporary artists have participated with pleasure in the design of Tequila boxes, bottles and labels.

The tequila landscape was outlined as a backdrop in paintings about the ranching universe. A very Jalisco and Bajío region  aesthetic will occupy hundreds of costumbrist canvases

One of the most prominent painters of the ranch theme in Jalisco, was undoubtedly Francisco Gálvez, born in 1824. He captured with his brush figures of country gentlemen or ranchers performing tasks typical of the field in the landscape of Jalisco.

A fortunate challenge for artists

Artists of the stature of Francisco Toledo, Leonora Carrington, Juan Soriano, Manuel Felguérez, Fernando de Zsyszlo and José Luis Cuevas, accepted the challenge of making a silver decanter on the glass bottle of Tequila 1800

It was not easy to convince these established artists to make a work as different and original as a silver sculpture. A challenge as a sculptor.

Fortunately, each one mastered the sculpture, achieving surprising pieces. Toledo carried out 2 editions and with that supported multiple educational and cultural initiatives in Oaxaca. Leonora Carrington, excited, made two liquors: El Rey and La Reina del Tequila.

Fernando de Szyszlo (1925)

Great Masters of Tequila 1800 Collection

Fernando de Szyszlo is one of the most important artists of the 20th century who emerged after the Second World War in Latin America. Szyszlo's work wavers in the twilight between the abstract and the figurative

His paintings evoke the quiet, monumental, and powerful of pre-Hispanic forms while at the same time suggesting the dynamic and often violent energies of their poetic and spiritual cores.

The darker energies of Szyszlo's art are counterbalanced by his elegance and his love of texture, color, and design.

Manuel Felguérez was born in the state of Zacatecas in 1929 and died in Mexico City in 2020. He was a fundamental artist in contemporary art in Mexico.

A pioneer of abstract art, he was involved in the “rupture” movement, which consisted of rejecting political art and sometimes pamphlet of the Mexican School of Painting, however he himself always pointed out that he was not an artist of rupture but of “change and continuity.

Felguérez incorporates constructivist geometrism, abstract expressionism, and informalism into his work with great eloquence. He had exhibitions in multiple museums in Mexico and around the world and his work is in collections inside and outside of Mexico.
