The Beginnings
In 1998, two longtime friends and fellow dancers, created Andanza. They were determined to give Puerto Rico a professional contemporary dance company and a dance school with a unique social component for underserved communities.
The Founders. Lolita Villanúa, took on the roles of Executive and Artistic Director of Andanza, while María Teresa Robles, became Director of Educational Programs.
The Mission
Andanza’s goal is to contribute to the development of dance, culture and society, and to the democratization of art in Puerto Rico through artistic creation, practice and education accessible to all.

The Company

It has developed a distinctive style, reached people of all ages and backgrounds -- including audiences who had never been in contact with the arts; integrated the work of artists from multiple generations, disciplines and nationalities; and commissioned original music.

Danza con Andanza: Community outreach in dance education
From its beginnings, the Andanza dance company and school has worked intensely to create awareness about the power of dance and the arts as tools for social change.
As true believers in the beauty of making the arts accessible to all individuals, their dancers and teachers have offered numerous performances and workshops in communities, schools and non-traditional spaces.
From 2002, the program Danza con Andanza, has offered weekly workshops for over 500 children and youth in disadvantaged communities. Also, during extremely trying circumstances for Puerto Rico --like the aftermath of hurricane María-- it has provided much needed means for coping with grief, trauma and loss.
