Spanning the period from 1983 to the present day, Stories of the Collection summarises key moments in the formation of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) Collection. Across distinct points and through the presentation of its most important acquisitions, we follow the desires, tastes, policies and circumstances of each specific moment of the collection’s development: The Decorative Collection (1983-89); The Art Collection (1990-97); Diversification (2000-04); Photographs (1991 and 2004); Precision (2004-08 and 2014); Prints (2007); Donations and Bequests (1967-2021); Resuming Acquisitions (2020-21); New Acquisitions: renowned artists (2022 and 2023); New Acquisitions: mid-career artists (2022 and 2023); Caixa Contest for Young Artists (2022 and 2023).

In 2004, under the direction of Miguel Lobo Antunes, Miguel Wandschneider was appointed programmer for the Culturgest Visual Arts area, taking over responsibility for acquisition proposals for the Collection. The curator gave priority to videos and installations, reinforcing the contemporary nature of the Collection and focusing mainly on the work of Portuguese artists such as Miguel Branco, Miguel Palma, Miguel Soares, Rui Toscano, among other artists already represented in the Collection. A total of 30 works were acquired between 2004 and 2005.

In 2006, the exhibition Camiños: Arte Contemporáneo Portugués – Colección Caxa Geral de Depósitos – Adquisiciones 2005/2006, curated by Miguel Wandschneider, was held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (April / May). 30 works were acquired by the artists shown in the exhibition, including Ana Jotta, Bruno Pacheco, Francisco Tropa, Jorge Queiroz, Luisa Cunha, Noronha da Costa and Ricardo Jacinto. In 2007, on the occasion of the exhibitions held at Fidelidade Mundial - Chiado 8, 20 drawings by João Queiroz and 10 paintings by José Loureiro were also acquired.

Acquisitions ceased until 2014, when 20 etchings by Luísa Correia Pereira were acquired after having formed part of the exhibition A Convocação de Todos os Seres (curated by Gaëtan Lampo and Miguel Wandschneider). This exhibition was dedicated to the artist following her death in 2009 and was presented at Culturgest in Porto between May and August 2011 and subsequently at Culturgest in Lisbon between February and May 2014.
