Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, singer, composer, writer and playwright, was born in Rio de Janeiro, on June 19, 1944. Son of historian and sociologist Sérgio Buarque do Hollanda and Maria Amélia Cesário Alvim.

Early career
One of the most important composers in the country, he wrote his first songs in the 1950s, and released his first LP, “Chico Buarque de Hollanda”, in 1966.

Festival era
In 1966, the song “A Banda” shared first place at the Brazilian Popular Music Festival, on Record, with “Disparada”.

'Roda Viva'
The following year, Chico Buarque and the group MPB-4 took third place at the Brazilian Popular Music Festival, with the iconic song "Roda Viva".

Chico, playwright
He wrote the play “Roda Viva”, directed by José Celso Martinez Corrêa. On July 18, 1968, after the end of the show, in São Paulo, the theater was vandalized and the artists were attacked.
Chico Buarque also wrote Gota D'Água (1975) and Ópera do Malandro (1978).

Political activity
With strong political activity, he participated in the March of the Hundred Thousand, in 1968, and the campaign for direct voting, in 1984, among other demonstrations.
