BON APPÉTIT!

Hwajeong museum’s special exhibition BON APPÉTIT! in 2017, showcases a selection of Chinese works of arts & craft works, ranging in date from the 17th to early 20th century. The exhibition focuses on culinary culture, as well as a whole process from manufacture (agriculture, fishing and hunting) to consumption (culinary culture). It includes 178 works (incl. 8 paintings) and has 3 sections (manufacture-storage-consumption). Each section has reproduction corner such as a rice paddy, Chinese kitchen and Qing dynasty style table setting.

PART 1. Manufacture


This section focuses on manufacture-agriculture, fishery, and hunting. Crops, fish, meat have been important resources for food. Artworks depicting scenes of those processes are exhibited in this section. Especially we reproduced rice & barley paddy fields and cabbage & radish fields.

2. Storage and Trade


This section is about storage facility and consumption process. When food ingredients had been gathered and cultivated via various kinds of manufacture processes, people stored them in storages such as jar, vessel and so on. These ingredients were sold or traded in the market. <scenery of kaifeng on qingming day> shows us a whole process.

Northern song dynasty court artist Zhang Zeduan painted a handscroll depicting the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng on Qingming Festival in spring time. Since then, several artists had depicted this scene repeatedly. Not only everyday life scenes but scenery of Qingming festival are described in detail.

The Guild of Good-fellowship by Li Bai(701~762) is described on painting.
One spring night, a banquet was held in peach blossom garden. Li bai and his friends attended and enjoyed it.

3. Consumption (Culinary Culture)

This section exhibits table wares used in tea time& meal time. It includes porcelain wares such as dish, cup, bowl and jar, carved rhinoceros-horn cups, Cinnabar Lacquer Box, Mother-of-Pearl inlaid tray table and so on. We reproduced late Qing dynasty style room with table wares and furniture.
