Nick Broomfield was one of the first NFTS students joining when the school opened in 1971. He had already made the film Who Cares, about a community in the Abercrombie district of Liverpool that were forcibly moved to suburban high-rise flat complex.

Nick Broomfield exploited the locality of the NFTS, Beaconsfield, when he made Proud to be British.

Proud to be British was a tongue in cheek portrait of the Conservative heartland in which the Studios are set, which premiered at the now defunct local cinema.

Behind The Rent Strike

Nick Broomfield's second film, made at the NFTS, was Behind the Rent Strike.

It was a study of social conditions, schooling and the working environment of the tenants in Kirkby, outside Liverpool, during a total rent and rates strike lasting fourteen months. The film then follows the rise of the tenants' political awareness during the strike.
