The inspiration

Join us for the Heliophysics Big Year (HBY)- a global celebration of the Sun’s influence on everything. Represented in this artistic concept is the underlying theme of unity and the primary HBY milestones— two solar eclipses and Parker Solar Probe's closest approach to the Sun.

The Sun touches everything

The theme of the Heliophysics Big Year is the 'Sun Touches Everything.' This silhouette depicts a diverse group of individuals witnessing an awe-inspiring solar eclipse together, highlighting how the Sun inspires connection and harmony. Every living being is touched by the Sun.

Where will you be?

Check out our eclipse map and make plans now for how you will witness the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. You can also watch it with us live!

Flying into the Sun

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is a record-breaking engineering marvel. It is the only human-made object to ever ‘touch’ the Sun and regularly shatters speed and distance records while capturing crucial data. Parker will make its closest approach to the Sun on Dec. 24, 2024.

Video: Sun facts

The Sun is a dynamic star, constantly changing and sending energy out into space.  It is a 4.5 billion-year-old yellow dwarf star.  It’s about 93 million miles from Earth and has blazing hot temperatures that top 27 million °F.  Learn more about our star.

NASA's eclipse posters

In addition to revealing the Sun’s atmosphere, an eclipse also darkens the sky, changes shadows, and cools the air. It can feel like living inside a piece of art. Several artists across NASA created posters expressing an eclipse through their lens. Meet the creators.
