Parallel Forest - Furniture
Designed by Mingyu Xu, 'Parallel Forest' won the Furniture Category in the Global Design Graduate Show in collaboration with Gucci 2022.
Mingyu Xu is a recent graduate from Central Saint Martins UAL holding a Masters degree in Design: Ceramics, Furniture or Jewellery. His work aims to use bamboo and ancient weaving techniques in new and unusual ways.
Mingyu’s collection of modular bamboo woven furniture captures the elastic and tough quality of bamboo weaving. The structures and joints of the bamboo forms provide unexpected stability and functionality.

"The original inspiration came from traditional Chinese bamboo woven objects, such as tea boxes, summer cooling tools (Zhu Furen), etc. I was enlightened by the visual composition of the act of Stacking during design progression. It reminded me of the Parisian Art Deco period."
Bamboo weaving is part of an important cultural heritage of Asian object making which has been marginalised or eliminated in modern lifestyles and living spaces. ‘Parallel Forest’ brings traditional and ancient bamboo weaving into the modern interior space.
"I’m exploring pieces from other categories for further inspiration; such as benches, hanging lights and byobu screens. My wish is it will one day become international."
