Bonn in upheaval
Beethoven grew up in a time of change. The Bönnsche masked ball in the electoral residence shown here is still a symbol of absolutism. At the same time Bonn was occupied by French troops in 1794. With them come the ideals of the French Revolution: "liberty, equality, fraternity".

The social life and open-minded environment of the residence city of the Cologne Electoral Princes shaped the young man and musician Beethoven and provided him with a variety of stimuli for his personal and musical development.

Beethoven perfected his dealings with patrons and patrons of the arts. His teacher Christian Gottlob Neefe made sure that he dedicated his first pieces to his employer. That is why they are called "Electoral Sonatas". With these dedications, Beethoven expressed his gratitude for the support.

Blows of fate
Beethoven was a sick man all his life and suffered from severe abdominal pain and colic, which even seemed life-threatening to him. As a musician, however, his progressive hearing loss hit him with an almost unimaginable stroke of fate, which triggered a serious life crisis for the almost 30-year-old.
